COLLEGE LIFE

Write a short essay describing how college life in the U.S. differs from college life in your home country.

Although I haven’t been as an undergraduate in the U.S., I can describe differences between college life in the U.S and college life in my country as a graduate. I think it doesn’t make a difference.

College life in Turkey always postponed and was interfered in many ways in last century. As a matter of fact that College life and democracy development has overlapped in my country. Hence, politician always has tried to influence and get benefit from (exploit) College Community. Since, College students and academics inherently oppose to current administration, politicians who held power have restricted academics freedom. After last military coup that was in 1980, many academics were arrested and prohibited from academic activities. Then, students and academics have found distinct academic ambiance after September 12, 1980. Politicians have expected academic communities to not involve politics. Therefore, college life in Turkey was impressed by politicians and armed powers. Academics and students were not able to freely state their idea.
Besides, there are tremendous differences when we compare those two college lives

WHAT IF?

if Marxism had been first adopted in Western Europe instead of in Russia, United States would be ruled by Communist Goverment. Unites States and its Europen Allies would struggle Countries that follow Capitalism during Cold War. In the 1950's, Senator McCarty would hunt decent people who were suspected to be Capitalist. People who attempt free enterprise would be arrested, since they violate the rules of Communism. United States would have just one political party (Communist Party) that hold whole capital in the country. Because Enron would not have existed, Enron scandal would not have happened. Probably, Cuba would have been a capitalist country. Many American entrepreneurs would have escaped to Cuba in order to live freely. The NBA would not have existed and the team that is supported by Communist Party would always win the games.

Intstead of Suburbia, we would have had Grey apartments with ten stories that were allocated by communist party. On the bright side, Gas price would never have increased. On the other hand, People might now suffer from gas shortage.

The Union of Soviet Capitalist Republics (USCR) would have considerably developed compared to Europe Countries. Poor Communist West Germany would have separated from West Block and declared joining with wealthy East Germany. After West Block countries which Romania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary would have separated from the block and accepted Capitalism.

Evaluation

Criteria
Background
Objectiveness
Without badgering and without pushing people, a little sarcasm
sentimental influence
good links among events
strong evidence
opposite views

REVIEW
A good documentary should give all background occurrences about the issue and prepare and warm up the audience for main topic. In that point, Bowling for Columbine has jumped to matters that seemed to be unrelated. According to film maker's style, all incidents might be chained each other, but documentary has appeared a little disorderly for a good documentary.
Secondly, Objectiveness is considerably precise for audience. If film director tries to manupulate the audience, people immediately comprehends this manipulation.
A talented documentary director should keep away from much comment, instead he should have experts talk in the documentary. Bowling for Columbine suffers from a lack of some expertise, instead, it has given a forum for many negative opinions.
On the other hand, some documentaries push people to reveal their opinion as the film makers guide. Some badger the people who do not serve the documentary's purpose. We can not exactly say that Columbine harrassed people, but like Charlton Heston's interview, it sometimes showed a little bit aggression. A good documentary has to influence and hit the audience so they will be able to talk about the documentary along days and weeks. Bowling for Columbine had very sentimental impact that's why it succeed and obtained a lot of awards. I believe that since the documentary is successful, it should link events. Sometimes, BFC has weaken the chain of incidents. Micheal Moore might have tried to send a political message and exhibited the conflict between a singer(Marlyn Manson) and a politician (Bill Clinton). But, I cannot see a relationship between Kosova Bombing and Columbine Massacre except timing. It must be an irony which is coincidental.
Besides, A good documentary should claim strong evidence based academic and scientific studies. BFC has sometimes exaggerated the relationship among matters. For exampe, It claims that white people have got armed and escaped to suburbia since they were scared from black people. But, Second Amendment has given a right white people to carry a gun for 300 years, needless to say, three century ago, white people were not able to be scared from black people.

EDUCATION: All we have some ideas about the meaning of education. Some can easily reach the dictionary definition of education that is the process of teaching students especially in a school. But, we are seeking extreme definition than superficial one. According to ancient philosophers, education is a kind of training method that is composed of several distinct patterns. These patterns regulate prominent daily behaviour as much as the secret of life. Therefore, they emphasis the importance of head to head studying. So, instructors could conveniently transfer their knowledge to young people. They believe that education is the way to transfer from someone who has extensive experiences and knowledge to someone who lacks these experiences.

BULLYING: Specific definition of bullying is to deliberately intimidate someone who is thought weak. Bullying concept has come out our education agenda in recent years. Because, many educators think that bullying weak students trigger unwanted incidents in the school. Even if a few criminal events happened, bullying has caused deep painful in memory of fragile youth. Therefore, preventing bullying is social responsibility than induvidual problem.

TERRORISM: Terrorism which means the unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims carries extensive and complex meaning in contemporary world. In the world, we face the fact that living variety race, nation and culture want to implement their own rules and beliefs. Goverment and state idea is based on sovereign that provide peace in counties and cities. It is believed that if there is no soverign authority, There would be anarchy. But, the question is who establish the states and regulate the rules. The minority that has dictinct belief system and religious would not want to share the belief system of power. And, the soverign holding the power and gun would try to enforce their rules. If minority doesn't obey the rules, there would be two options in front of the goverment. They would accept their right or persuade them using violence. And, if they oppose the goverment, they are called terrorist.

SUMMARY OF "A CAPACITY FOR JOY"

Play in animals has not only a prominent role to train them for adapting habitat, but also it helps them improve their collective and physical capacities. Behaviors of African and Indian Animals observed in studies show that play seems to be both a sign and a source of joy. Some animals try to imitate human acts while playing, like Norma, but most pursuit their instinct such as Alaska Buffalo. A group of captive animals like dolphins enjoy playing objects that turn them competitive creatures. Many animals are liable to play with another animals and human being. Dogs prefer play human who comprehends their motivation rather than other animals.

Average Daily Use Of D.C. Metro

This graph describes the daily use of D.C. Metro in the rush time known as 8.00 A.M. and 6.00 P.M. The graph indicates that average daily use of D.C. Metro gradually reaches a peak at 400 passengers from 6.00 A.M. to 8.00 P.M. Subsequently, numbers of passenger dramatically plummets to below 200 till 10.00 A.M. After 10 A.M., average numbers of use of Metro increases a little until 12.00 P.M. Then, number of commuters remains steady from 12.00 P.M to 2.00 P.M and noticeably plunges at 100 between 2.00 P.M. and 4.00 P.M. and again, it sharply go up at 400 passengers until 6.00 P.M. Genetic Engineering and the Patenting of Life

Many religious traditions say that Life is a gift from God, given freely for the benefit of all, and not to be owned by individuals or groups. Many scientists also say it is wrong to patent Life. They assert that genes belong to the whole human race. In 2000 the presidents of the Royal Society of London and the National Academy of Sciences in the US stressed that "the human genome itself must be freely available to all humankind." The Pope says, "Because it is a gift, life can never be regarded as a possession or as private property." And last year it was reported that GE canola, corn and soy were found growing near ports in Japan, presumably as a result of spillage from trucks. The GE potatoes and GE corn just mentioned are meant to reduce the need for pesticide. for example, use a potent cocktail of different chemicals, including 2-4,D and, it is thought, Paraquat. Scientists are thinking about genetically engineering human genes into the brains of mice. The biotechnology industry claims that genetic engineering is just like traditional breeding, i.e., GE plants are substantially equivalent to non-GE plants and, therefore, that they do not need any extra regulation. There are indications that they may not be safe. An English scientist reported that rats fed GE potatoes developed cancerous tumors. Secret memoranda from the FDA reveal that the agency ignored warnings from its own senior scientists who pointed out that GE is risky. Monsanto president has been quoted as saying "Safety is the Government's responsibility." Thinking that this gene might be useful to prevent or treat HIV, the institute patented the gene, without telling the man and without including him among the patent owners. The World Medical Association declared patenting life forms unethical in 1998 - because such patenting is aimed at maximizing profits rather than making treatment available to patients. The WMA believes that doctors have an ethical obligation to share skills and knowledge with colleagues. Some people believe that the human race will become two tiered: a small number of superhumans presiding over the old humans who will be reduced to doing menial work for the supermen and superwomen. Scientists used to believe that each gene had only one function. But then they discovered that while a dog cell has 39 pairs of chromosomes, a human cell has only 23 pairs. Scientists had thought thought that as humans are more complex and do more things, human cells would have more pairs of chromosomes. So scientists now believe a gene may have more than one function, i.e. may affect more than one trait; and multiple genes affect one trait. One strategy the proponents have come up with is the idea that GE food is needed to feed the hungry. The United Nations Food Programme reports that there is enough food produced worldwide to feed everyone one and a half times over. This means that 'inventors' in the US can claim what they have created as 'novel' even though the product may have been patented elsewhere.

Democracy is caused by Tax

Goverments sometimes have to follow one of two courses of action: deducting tax rates or raising tax rates. Tax have been an issue throughout the history of civilization. First, sovereign countries collected taxes from lands they had conquered. They had supplied necessity for fublic welfare and equipments of new wars and it went on so. In course of time, kingdoms and emperors expanded their borders to such an extend that they were not able to invade and incorporate new lands. Therefore, they initiated to increase their domestic taxes that citizens had to pay. Pressure on countrymen to related to tax stimulated people and citizens wanted to govern countries together with kings and men of kings. That desire known as Democracy contains mostly tax issue, Magna Carta agreement is exposed with this reason in the England in the beginning the 13th Century.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

'' To be or not to be'', this familiar quotation from Shakespeare's Hamlet has repeated along years, and this exhibits a considerable issue that is a thin line between death and life. The worst is to live on the line or walk the line with more popular expression. So, leaving Martin in the 'brain dead' position would suffer him and his family either. Sometimes, living in the memories is better than agonizing in the corridor of hospitals. But, we can not blame his family about their hesitation. Martin, a father of two young children, a son of his parents, a brother of his siblings and a husband of his wife, is so precious for them. We can not easily suggest them to let him go. This issue is directly about medical, social, psychological and religious phenomenons. In my opinion, Martin's family should listen to his doctors carefully and they should comprehend medical decision which is nothing to do for him. I think, to abandon him on the line is worst decision that his family has options.

THE FACTS CAUSED WORLD WAR II

After World War I (WWI), The Allience could not handle peace order well. Because hostility didn't over. Moreover, some countries did not satisfy the ending war. Especially, traditionally competing with Germany, England and France did not want Germany to get strength again even if economical. Therefore, they made Versailles treaty harder for the other countries who tried to adjust their economies such as Germany. Having suffer as economical, German Nation reacted to England and France, this constrained situation established new political environment in Germany called Nationalizm. Nationalizm or the other called Nazism came out in the German Public that blamed foreigners especially Jewish. Jewish community controlled some economic factors like finance and jewellery in the 1930s. In Germany, with nationalism, the hostility of jewish appeared after 1930.

On the other hand, some of The Allience felt that post-war sharing was not fair. Italy wanted to more land than he gained. Italy opposed that some little islands located in Mediterranean were given to Greece. Mussolini, leader of Italy, started arming like his friend Hitler. Like Europe, the other regions of the world, conflict among nations was increasing considerably. Japan aggressively got strength military. Japan also was demanding some lands from China and Russia. The President of United States, Wilson figured out the facts and noticed peril approaching. He apprehended the conditions of ending the WWI would cause the beginning of new enourmous war. He offered a foundation that has a mission to protect the world peace. England and France did not want to found that institution since rivalry. Wilson's attempt was not able to reach a conclusion. And, the institution known League of nations was not founded. After 1931, Hitler who is leader of NAZI Party got power in Germany. Then, he and his party inititiated to implement their nationalism and racism politics. Hitler first attacked Poland, later Germany captured all Europe except England. WWII started. His nationalism lead to kill more than six millions Jewish and Gipsy. Besides, WWII caused to die millions soldier and civil people.

If the proposal offered by Wilson had been accepted, WWII would not have begun. Anyway, after WWII, this time in the light of adverse experiences, almost all countries compromised to found the United Nations.

OUTLINE CHAIN OF CAUSES

Healthy Long Life

I would like to live long but healthy long life. In contemporary, scientists are searching codes of long life, and these studies have a great progress including social, physical, environmental factors. We can get the picture to have a look to increasing average retirement age.

Technology brings lots things to our lives especially considering on medical improvement researchs which makes our life better. On the other hand, technology can cause to illnesses that have not been diagnosed and treated yet. such as cancer. However, we can prevent from those diseases and have a healthy long life by following simple rules which are working out regularly, eating organic food, keeping away from stress.

The End of Suburbia

1- Suburbia life style is going to end due to increasing of oil.
2- In the beginning of 1920's, american industry needed much more than human power than the other energy such as oil. Need of human power brought out immigration phenomenon. Industrialisation and immigration cause major problem in the cities. Some of problems were pollution, security, noise and education. These problems made cities unfavorable place to live. Then, the idea of suburbia has generate to ease workers and families of them. Suburbia lifesytle improved so rapiply that more than fifty percent of population move in suburbia. These workers must be transported to cities. Automotive industry and goverments supported to constuct high ways with six lanes. Buying cars, people drove to cities, malls, shops. At last, after peak of oil production, oil reserves have gradually ran out. Hence, the problem of deprivation of energy came out in the United States.
3- Peak of oil has started declining. In 2003, when blackout happened, 55-60 millions american was influenced lack of electricity. According to Mattew Simmons, CEO of Simmons & Co.International, the weather was 95 F and all cooling systems were used at the same time in houses and offices. That situation indicates if population need much more energy, probability of caos will be so close.
I do not believe that media is responsible for this problem. Because, media generally acknowledges all information about decreasing of energy. They published a lot of documentaries.
4- There are following counter-arguments that film-maker deal:
hydrogen energy has developed
many farm lands to produce bio-energy
hearing about run out oil for years, some scientists exaggerated this problem.

5- Richard Heinberg, Journalist, alerts to us, running out oil would cause many wars. He believe that there is no locigal reason to invade Iraq. He says if Iraq had no oil, we would not have been in Iraq. He reminds Carter's statement in 1987 '' use military access to oil in the middle east''

6- James Howord Kunstler, New Urbanist, lecturer and author of Home From Nowhere, declared that United States is going to make manufacturing, home, sport smaller. He expects poor prospect for suburbia because of oil depression. He suggest to change life style.

MIXED MARRIAGES

MIXED MARRIAGES

The earth we live has gradually initiated to be a global village. Once upon a time, people didn’t use to emigrate from their place. Time after time, with the economic and social constraints, people were compelled to migrate from their home. Immigration has brought some major problems inspite of its benefit. One of the effects of immigration was obviously a cultural conflict; it is called as mixed marriages phenomenon. I cannot say that mixed marriages are adverse. Instead, I would like to mention two side of this issue. Combining of distinct cultures seems to be fascinating for most people. However, it is still considered getting married with a person from same environment should be relevant. It is believed that when a couple gets married families of this couple also get married. It interpret that families always communicate each other. Hence, advocate of non-mixed marriages support to minimize the diversity of cultures.
Despite fact that of opposite reviews, if mixed marriages are managed well, mixed marriages would contribute to couples and families. For instance, When my brother-in low got married with a foreigner, some relatives thought that this marriage could be difficult because of differences of culture. His wife, coming from Russia, was completely different from our country. Her religious, language and culture obviously showed deep distinction in many ways. But, they loved each other and got married. Now, she learned Turkish and our culture but at the same time, she continues living her own culture and religious. He doesn’t ask her change her life style. She works in Turkey. They had a baby who is bilingual. His wife and daughter visit Russia to see their family each year. Her family visits her sometimes. So, cultures interact each other. Occasionally, even a few problems come out due to misunderstanding, all we know that is usual. Maybe, if he had been married with a native, he would have been happy as he is now. I admit, the secrets of happiness of mixed marriage are to recognize and comprehend cultures.

IDEAL AGE FOR INTROCUDING COMPUTERS

COMPUTERS IN SCHOOL

Computer technology has a considerable role to design education system. Tutors who are responsible for designing education system encounter the artificial intelligence. But, the point that which age should be proper for introducing the artificial intelligence named computer. I strongly believe that the ideal age for a child to launch computers could be the age of 8th grade and following. I have many reasons why children should not access to computers before 8th grade. After being borned, each child acquires the ability of comprehension. Comprehension process improves in many natural ways. This course sould not be interrupted by anyone or any device. For instance, we cannot help babies creep and walk. Those acts correspond their desire of monitoring the world. Toddlers gradually understand shapes and dimensions. They initiate to recognize the nature that shelters to every living beings such as human, animals and plants. When children are interested in the genuineness of nature world, computers can take them away from reality. Computers provide imaginary world without dimension for young students to compare to real world. Only a child who knows the nature world could distinguish imaginary world and evaluate all the differences between make-believe and reality. In conclusion, the children of 8th grade seem to be ready to progress the way of computers’ guidance.

Answers of Critical Thinking Strategies

Answers of Critical Thinking Strategies

1- Technological devices like computers radiate some harmful beam that influences human health adversely. Especially computers contain that harmful beam named as radiation. Besides, bright computer screen make eyes tired and burn them.
2- As the children are busy with the technology, instead of being interested in simple nature circulation like observing blooming and snowing, they might miss the flow of life. One has the taste of this process only during childhood, but, as a matter of fact we are obliged be bonded with computer our entire life.

ASSIGNMENT, BEYOND RIVALRY

SUMMARY OF “BEYOND RİVALRY”

Author Elizabeth Stark believe that sibling relationship probably can be the only way
which provides a link to past with the warmth of early family life for elderly people. The author claims that siblings relationship generally weaken due to social connections as well as carriers, marriage and having own family. The author describe some deep psychological factors like death and parental sickness would bring sibling’s together or separate much more than they really are by triggering deeply their emotional background. According to the author, after death of mother or father, if one of siblings can substitute parent, this substitution make them closer. However, the author refer that deeply competition sleeping beyond to past prevents from their getting along each other. Conclusion, the author implies that unlike being friendship or spouse, the only bond linking to nice recollection is being sibling.
SUMMARY OF “STATE LOTTERIES ARE NEEDED”

Lottery, providing essential contribution for state, is a voluntary social phenomenon. That phenomenon has been based on historical facts thorough 500 years and has been very convincing tool for legislator who try to increase public funds and improve public service. Comparing to the other voluntary contributions like charity, lottery enlarge the provision of the public good and enhance state’s fiscal situation. So, State would make a decision how it can spend all funds. While some of states need to distribute those funds for job, the others tend to allocate education and university scholarship. Well managed lottery programs have made states escalated their budget. The best example of well managed lottery program is that of Georgia State. The State gets a contribution from neighborhood states that are a prohibition of lottery.

The March of Penguins

Most of Animal behaviours are based on ''the study of group'' that we are used to see in human beings. In other words, this study brings out this issue that some animals have ''emotional intellegence'' forcing them living together and sharing their needs. an excellent example of such intelligence can be found in penguins. Many people firstly heard about this kind of intellegence while watching the documentary named ''The march of Penguins''. In the documentary, In the polars, female penguins lay eggs in about - 40 C tempeture degree. and they save the eggs with their fury legs and tummied. If the eggs come out, they freeze in cruel cold. Even if they survive the cold. Females and males come close side by side and females transfer eggs to males. Penguins must be very careful in this process because the eggs can be freeezed. Then, for females, the deadly journey initiate toward to sea since some of them would not come back. But, the worst, the baby covered with eggs will need food when the eggs break.

Penguin who returns late cause her newborn baby die. On the other hand, male penguins keep the eggs from freezing. Even penguins who are used to cold tempetures sometimes fail to survive harsh winters. They must snuggle together for protecting freezing wind.

For a while, Female reach the sea where has many fresh food for their babies. But, some of them become victim of the other sea hunters. At last, with their foods, most of penguins come back to home. Meanwhile, few eggs break and some of baby penguins come out. Admiringly, all female penguins find their family without any hesitation and begin feeding their babies.

This documentary influncedTV and film industry and won the Oscar award but the more important thing than this award, this documentary prove that penguins have emotional intellegence that we assume that only Human Beings have.
